Today, on Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day, the Spinal Injuries Association in partnership with Hilary Meredith Solicitors launched a DVD which aims to answer the big questions about life after a spinal injury.
There are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK, and around 1,000 get injured every year including a growing number of military personnel through falls, car crashes, bullets or knife injuries which either crush or cut the spinal cord. The conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan mean more young men and women return to the UK with multiple injuries, and in some of the worst cases spinal cord injuries.
The production and launch of the DVD ‘So you're paralysed' is supported by Hilary Meredith Solicitors and the firm's managing partner, Hilary Meredith commented:
"As a firm we take pride in offering long-term support, practical help and encouragement to restore the injured person's quality of life and maximise independence.
"Our role is very much two fold - helping the injured person claim compensation to get the best medical treatment possible, and help them with practical advice and emotional support while they come to terms with their injury.
"This is a really important project which provides inspiration and hope to the spinal cord injured in rebuilding their lives.
"In the immediate aftermath the injured person needs emotional support and clear thinking to answer urgent questions. But as part of our long-term support programme, I feel this DVD offers both encouragement and answers to some difficult and very personal questions."
The DVD covers subjects such as relationships, sex, body image, physical rehabilitation, and mental and emotional issues. It will be available from the end of June free of charge and will show that although life is different when a person is paralysed, it is not over. Working, driving, relationships, children, holidays - all aspects of ‘normal' life - are still achievable.
