Severely injured soldier is let down by Ministry of Defence

Senior Partner Hilary Meredith has called for the Ministry of Defence to do more for injured soldiers after the story of Private Alex Stringer was published today.

Private Stringer, of 23 Pioneer Regiment Royal Logistics Corps, has had more than 30 operations after losing both legs, shattering his pelvis and suffering injuries so severe that his left arm had to be amputated at the elbow. Despite his obviously debilitating injuries, Alex is currently forced to live in a tiny council flat on the SIXTH floor. His wheelchair means he has limited access to his home and cannot even enter some rooms, including his daughter's bedroom. If the elevator to the flat is broken, Alex is stranded.

Hilary sees this scenario all too often, and is calling on the MoD to do more to help the heroes returning from the battlefield:

"This is unfortunately so typical of the plight of our brave but wounded soldiers - the MoD should bow their heads in shame!

"The Army compensation scheme is clearly inadequate - they do not provide funds for adapted accommodation or care and then a soldier must fall back on the State and postcode lottery.

"As more and more young men and women are medically discharge with double and triple amputations as a result of Taliban bombs in Afghanistan, the State is left to pick up the bill they can ill afford. This is so wrong."
