Remembrance Sunday: thinking of those who never came home

On Remembrance Sunday, we remember those who lost their lives serving our country and the families who live with their loss.

For many people, this is a deeply personal day. The name on the war memorial belongs to someone in their family. A photograph, a set of medals or a story handed down through generations keeps that person close.

My work with the Armed Forces community began in 1987, representing a widow whose husband had died during a military exercise in Canada. Since then, much of my working life has been spent helping service personnel, veterans and bereaved families.

That work has made me conscious of how much can sit behind a conversation about military service. There may be pride, affection and a strong sense of belonging, alongside grief or experiences that remain difficult to discuss. We should make room for people to remember in their own way.

This Sunday, my thoughts will be particularly with those who have lost someone. Public ceremonies matter, but grief is often private. For a family living with a death, the loss is there throughout the year, long after the wreaths have been laid.

I will also be thinking of veterans living with injuries and the lasting psychological effects of service, and of relatives caring for them. Getting the right help can be difficult, particularly when someone is unwell or struggling to adjust to civilian life. They should be able to rely on support that understands their circumstances and treats them with dignity.

In my work, that means continuing to press for answers for bereaved families and helping those who have served obtain the care and support they need. It also means taking the time to listen.

As we pause for the two-minute silence on Sunday, we will each have our own thoughts. Mine will be with those who never came home, and with the families who have had to find a way forward without them.

We will remember them.
