Sexual Abuse in Army Recruitment Medicals: You Are Not Alone

Hundreds of women who served in the British Army have come forward with accounts of sexual abuse during recruitment medical examinations spanning from the 1970s to 2016.

Wiltshire Police are currently conducting a nationwide investigation into these allegations. The Ministry of Defence has confirmed it is cooperating fully with the inquiry, which concerns medical assessments carried out by doctors contracted to the Army over several decades.
What began as isolated reports to military police has grown into one of the most significant investigations of its kind. The alleged offences are said to have taken place at multiple Army locations across the UK.
At Hilary Meredith Solicitors, we represent individuals who have suffered sexual abuse or assault while serving in the Armed Forces. These cases often expose repeated patterns of misconduct, failures by those in command to act appropriately and the lasting emotional and psychological harm that follows.
For too long, barriers such as loyalty, fear of stigma and entrenched hierarchies have made it difficult for survivors to come forward. A British Army report on misogyny and sexual harassment – released in 2024 following a Freedom of Information request – further revealed the depth of cultural and systemic failings that many servicewomen have faced.
The law is clear: sexual assault in the military is a criminal offence, just as it is in any other setting. Everyone who serves their country has the right to safety, dignity and justice.
Pursuing a military injury or abuse claim is about far more than financial redress. It is about recognition and accountability. It is about protecting those serving now and future generations.
